THE UNIVERSITY GUADALAJARA, through its Board of Trustees’ Permanent Education Commission and Fundación Universidad de Guadalajara, A.C., with the objective of enhancing the quality of teaching, academic excellence and progress towards meeting its objectives, and pursuant to articles 11 and 31, section X, of the Organic Act of the University of Guadalajara, in chapters one and seven of the rules for awarding special prizes and recognitions, extend an invitation to the society at large to nominate distinguished graduates of any University of Guadalajara degree program to receive the Galardón Honorífico Universitario Enrique Díaz de León 2010 (Enrique Díaz de León Honorary University Award for 2010).

The Galardón Honorífico Universitario “Enrique Díaz de León honors alumni who have done exceptional work for the University and who have distinguished themselves through their contributions to at least one academic field or discipline, as well as individuals who contribute or have contributed significantly to science, technology, the humanities, the arts or education, or who perform or have performed extremely valuable work in benefit to the University of Guadalajara, the country of Mexico or humanity in general.

Nominations must be submitted by third parties, whether they be professional associations, alumni associations, public and private institutions, members of the University community or the general public.

Candidates must have a professional track record which demonstrates the following qualities:

I. Membership in the University community (academic or administrative staff, students, graduates, alumni, retired and pensioned staff or officials).
II. University pride (leadership and professional ethics).
III. Recognized ability and standing (application and/or development of scientific knowledge, technical resources and perfection of their abilities).
IV. Professional excellence (continued improvement as a practicing professional).
V. Recognized status within the University (proof of outstanding contributions to academic disciplines or actions of extraordinary value which have benefited the University of Guadalajara, the state, the country or humanity).
• Candidates must have performed exceptional work in any or all of the following areas:
• Teaching (the teacher-student relationship, fundamental to the process of teaching-learning).
• Research (systematic and creative work carried out for the purpose of advancing the frontiers of knowledge and solving social and human problems).
• Extension (programs and projects in service to the community provided by an institution through its academic departments with the aim of disseminating its work throughout society).

Members of the University community who have previously received the Galardón Honorífico Universitario Enrique Díaz de León award (including its predecessor, called “Persea Enrique Díaz de León”) are not eligible.

Nominations must be submitted in writing and delivered to Ms. Mónica Paz Stettner Carrillo, Coordinator of the Graduates and Alumni Office (in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico). Submissions must include the following:

1. The candidate’s curriculum vitae, which must be no longer than 50 letter-sized pages. It must include the candidate's academic background and documentation verifying its content.

2. An explanation of reasons in support of the candidacy, signed by the nominating party (two-page maximum).

3. Accurate and up-to-date contact data for the candidate and the nominating party.

Procedure:

Proposals must be received between the date of publication of this announcement and 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 15th 2010 at the Graduates and Alumni Office.

For candidates who live in the United States of America, proposals must be sent via an international messenger service (FedEx, DHL, UPS) and received between the date of publication of this announcement and 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 15, 2010 at the aforementioned Graduates and Alumni Office. They may also be sent to the offices of the University of Guadalajara Foundation in the United States of America, Inc. in Los Angeles, CA.

The Coordinator of the Graduates and Alumni Office will verify that nominations meet the requirements set out in this announcement and send them to the Permanent Education Commission, which will schedule them for consideration during a plenary session of the University Board of Trustees, which will select the winners of the Galardón Honorífico Universitario Enrique Díaz de León 2010 award.

Decisions by the Board will be final. Announcements of the same will be published in the Gaceta Universitaria and on the websites of the University of Guadalajara (www.udg.mx), the Graduates and Alumni Office (www.egresados.udg.mx) and Fundación Universidad de Guadalajara, A.C. (www.fundacion.udg.mx).

Any aspects or issues not mentioned in this announcement will be resolved by the Organizing Committee.

The award presentation for the Galardón Honorífico Universitario Enrique Díaz de León 2010 will take place in December at the University of Guadalajara's Enrique Díaz de León Auditorium.
