Issue No. 57 of Luvina magazine, which was especially dedicated to writers in the city of Los Angeles, was presented in LA on May 5 and 7, with the presence of a number of the authors of its main pieces, as well as publishers, intellectuals and special guests.

Luvina, the University of Guadalajara’s literary magazine, offers a range articles, interviews as well as prose and poetry works from highly prominent authors from Mexico and around the world. It is distributed throughout Mexico.

Silvia Eugenia Castillero, the magazine’s editor, said that a number of prominent authors took part in the presentations, including Gloria Álvarez, William Archila, B. H. Fairchild, Suzanne Lummis, Cece Peri, Wanda Coleman, Rubén Martínez and Bill Mohr.

The winter 2009 issue of Luvina “was presented, as always, at the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL). As this particular issue functioned as a kind of anthology for writers, poets, narrators and essayists from LA, they thought that it was important to present it there. This was because the large population of Hispanic writers in Los Angeles have not had a common venue, and they find themselves in a situation of relative isolation. This publication features writers who have never had the chance to be together.”

Castillero added that the presentation during FIL in Guadalajara was very emotive, since the authors read their texts in English and “we read them in Spanish. The magazine only has the poems in English, while other works other were in Spanish. The rest of the texts can be found in both languages on our website: www.luvina.com.mx.”

The May 5 Los Angeles presentation of the magazine took place at Tia Chucha's Centro Cultural, founded by artist Luis Rodríguez, while the May 7 presentation was held at Estudio 50.

Representing Luvina were co-editors Víctor Ortiz Partida and José Israel Carranza. The editors stressed that they would like their magazine to establish itself in LA and be distributed there, with possible distribution points including UCLA and a number of book shops. Luvina is published quarterly and has a circulation of about 3,000 copies.
