Hundreds had the opportunity to see some of the best that Latin cinema has to offer during the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF), held from September 12-19, 2008.

The Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival is an initiative to promote the creation and screening of films by Latin directors. Since 2008, it has been supported by the University of Guadalajara at Los Angeles with the aim of promoting Hispanic and multicultural viewpoints in this region.

This festival, whose main theaters in 2008 were the Egyptian Theater and the Mann Cinemas, has served to bridge the world of Hollywood and independent directors. It serves as a springboard for the promotion and distribution of Latin films and features premiere films, documentaries, short films and special screenings.

Several awards are presented at the festival, and it is a meeting place for directors, buyers and distributors. LALIFF also features workshops about the film industry, discussion panels, laboratories, networking gatherings and educational programs. It also serves up some the best gala events to be found in Hollywood.

The University of Guadalajara at Los Angeles is to set up a promotional area at the festival's Film Industry Office to promote Guadalajara’s International Film Festival as well as several of the UDGLA’s cultural projects.

Following the festival’s inauguration, the University of Guadalajara at Los Angeles and the Guadalajara International Film Festival sponsored a cocktail-Mexican night at the Egyptian Theater, where entertainment was provided by the Mexican singer Paloma del Río.

About 300 guests attended the LALIFF cocktail party, including prominent producers, directors and actors. Among those in attendance were Demian Bichir, Diego Luna, Alfonso André and Cesar "Vampire" López of the group Jaguares, Carina Ricco, Lupe Ontiveros, Sergio Arau and Yareli Arizmendi. Other figures included The New Lact festival’s artistic director and film director Jose Luis Valenzuela, the Consul General of Mexico’s cultural attaché in Los Angeles Alejandro Pelayo and director of the Mexico program at UCLA James Wilkie.
