The the film Desierto Adentro was screened to the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) in Los Angeles, California on November 26, 2008, as part of a drive by the University of Guadalajara at Los Angeles to promote culture and support the Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG).
This film, directed by Rodrigo Pla, was one of four selected by the FICG to compete for the nomination for best feature film in a foreign language at the 2009 Golden Globes Awards, which are given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
In addition to Desierto Adentro, other films selected at the Guadalajara International Film Festival were Lake Tahoe by Fernando Eimbcke, El baño del Papa by César Charlonne and Out of Tune by Walter Lima.
Desierto Adentro tells the life story of Aureliano, son of Elías, who is predestined, as are his brothers and sisters, two die prematurely as divine punishment for a sin committed by their father. His childhood is spent in confinement as the result of illness and the fears of Elías, who believes he will be the first to die. Aureliano is entrusted with the job of rewriting the family history which gradually unravels through stories told by the father. This enables him to understand the reason why they are obliged to live in the desert, separated from civilization. Aureliano constructs a church in order to obtain forgiveness from God and has a love affair with his sister Micaela which will irrevocably change his life.
The Guadalajara International Film Festival actively promotes Mexican films which are chosen each year with an eye towards international exposure and the possibility of being nominated for the Golden Globe Awards.
