Carlos Fuentes inaugurated the certificate program, Latin American Narrative in the 20th century: Local stages, global horizons and voices of change, by giving a keynote lecture on February 15, 2008 in Los Angeles.

This certificate program is the first of the academic and cultural promotion activities that the University of Guadalajara will be carrying out on a year-round basis through the UDGLA, its satellite campus in Los Angeles.

Carlos Fuentes, in his inaugural lecture, gave an overview out what Latin American authors produced in the 19th century. He mentioned the poetry of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and Pablo Neruda as well as prose works by Juan Rulfo, Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar and Gabriel García Márquez. He made special mention of works by Chicano, Cuban-American and Puerto Rican authors and recommended that “we should adopt an inclusive, not an exclusive attitude and appreciate the communities of imagination and writing that exist both north and south of the border.”

The writer spoke of the evolution of Mexican and Latin American novels and asserted that technological developments which allow for immediate exchange of information give the current generation of writers an advantage over those of his generation.  Fuentes said that the writing of younger authors is much more varied and covers a greater and more interesting range of themes than his generation could write about.

This certificate program, intended for university students, graduates and professionals interested in expanding their critical outlook and gaining a deeper understanding of new trends in Latin American literature, consisted of courses and keynote lectures given by Carlos Monsiváis, Vicente Luis Mora and Mario Bellatín. It was coordinated by the Peruvian literary critic Julio Ortega.

The program was run from February 15-March 12, 2008 and was divided into four modules covering the following topics: The new genres and forms of society in conflict: Narratives about violence, new realism, crime novels, and hybrid novels; Transborder narratives: Life on the fringes, journeys of exploration, plural identities and multilingual voices; Narrators and technologies of the 21st century. The last module of the certificate course included a fiction writing workshop.

The inaugural lecture, which was held at the Mark Taper Auditorium in the Los Angeles Central Library, was marked by the presence of many prominent figures from the Los Angeles Latin community as well as officials from the University of Guadalajara. Among them were the Mexican Ambassador to the United States Arturo Sarukhan, Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the president of the University of Guadalajara Foundation Raúl Padilla López.
