Friday, October 30th, 2009 (All day)

In a bid to reinvigorate the tradition of celebrating the “Day of the Dead” (Día de Muertos) in Los Angeles, California – an American city which has more people of Mexican origin than any other after Mexico City - the University of Guadalajara at Los Angeles (UDGLA), the Consul General of Mexico in LA and the Los Angeles Theatre Academy organized a performance of El fiestón de las Calaveras on October 30.

More than a hundred people attended the event, held at the Consulate offices, including Consul for Cultural Affaires Alejandro Pelayo, several other Consulate officials and representatives from UDGLA. This was yet another of the cultural and outreach activities that UDGLA has carried out in this part of the USA as part of its program aimed at making a broad range of cultural events rooted in the Mexican tradition accessible to the local Latino and Mexican community.

El fiestón de las calaveras, under the direction of Eleazar del Valle, is a performance where calaveras or “skull poems" bring a touch of humor and a festive mood to a cemetery setting.
