Symposium on Transborder Issues

With the intention of promoting dialogue about topics such as migration, public policy, education, trade, energy resources and integration between Mexico and the United States, the University of Guadalajara at Los Angeles (UDGLA) and the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), held the Symposium on Transborder Issues on May 8, 2008.

This forum, which took place in Los Angeles, California, consisted of four roundtable discussions where 20 experts from both countries participated. The topics discussed were as follows: Trends in the evolution of immigration and policies which offer possible solutions; Energy reform in Mexico; Transborder oil areas and foreign investment; Policy for higher education and integration in North America; Trade policy and observed trends.

More than a hundred visitors and students from UCLA attended the speeches, presentations and question-and-answer sessions held at the Covel Commons auditorium.

Participating academics and specialists in different fields included the following: James Wilkie, Chair of the UCLA Program on Mexico and chairman of the Worldwide Consortium for Research on Mexico (PROFMEX); David Hayes-Bautista, director of the UCLA Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture; Gustavo Padilla, Executive Coordinator of the University of Guadalajara at Los Angeles (UDGLA); Porfirio Muñoz Ledo, coordinator of the Broad Progressive Front; José Ángel Pescador, the former Consul General of Mexico in Los Angeles as well as the former Secretary of Education for Mexico.
